Fuel or acceleration: A pareto design procedure for ships

Abstract

Ship design, as all other designs, is continuously changing. The design method used in this study is to calculate ship resistance and ship motion with algorithms and then to calculate the dynamic effects such as acceleration, slamming, and added resistance and to quantify the influence of the principal ship dimensions on these derived quantities in a simulation process. Pareto fronts are obtained for two parameters, such as the effective horsepower and acceleration at the bow. An example of applications for constant Froude number is reported. Possible combination of ship principal dimensions is then obtained for the relative importance of the parameter as assigned by the owner or the designer. The implications of this study to regulatory rules such as “fixed constant fish boat length” are discussed. © 2018 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
